LASIK and Refractive Laser Surgery

Refractive eye surgery is any eye surgery used to improve the refractive state of the eye and decrease or eliminate reliance on contact lenses and glasses. It can reduce or permanently correct short-sightedness (myopia), long-sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

The most commonly used method is LASIK, which stands for ‘laser in-situ keratomileusis’, and is a technique of laser refractive surgery. PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) is very similar to LASIK, and uses the same laser to re-shape the cornea. The vision results are as good as with LASIK. Other refractive methods include phakic intraocular lenses and clear lens exchange.

At the NEC, we have available and are experienced in all of the above techniques. Your ophthalmologist will access and discuss with you which is the most suitable option.
